Where is the inspiration?
Where is the inspiration?
Recall: Inspiration - means to ""breathe-in"...a
Quote of the Month: "What a composer of electronic music needs most is
not an understanding of the apparatus, but a new understanding of sound."
-Hugh Le Caine-
As a musician/composer who deals with both acoustic and electronic
instruments, I always find it curious to see people arguing about the
various merits of acoustic vs. electronic or electronic vs. acoustic? The
above quote by Hugh Le Cain is very telling because even though he was
talking about electronic music, sound ( and silence ) is the building
blocks of ALL music. The musician/composer must relearn how to hear
whether his/her instrument is a piano, magnetic tape, or digital
workstation. We must unlearn what we have learned and begin to hear
again. Of course the keepers of tradition in whatever idiom will tell you
that the tradition, the past is what keeps music alive. Tradition is
organic and constantly growing. Todays avant garde is tomorrows
tradition. The one rule is to throw away the rules and depend upon your
ears. Music is an auditory response; the ears alone are what interprets
sound to the brain.
Digital vs analog??? How about the music produced?? I remember musicians
arguing that analog instruments always went out of tune, that you could
not save a patch, and were hard to program. What they wanted were
instruments that you could press one button and call up a sound and would
always stay in tune!!! Now the cycle has come back for that analog
sound!!! For me, it is not the appartus, but the sound. Most of the
music made back in the good old days did not exploit the potential of the
analog synth just like today most musicians do not exploit the potential
of digital synths. We must get back to the sound and not the apparatus.
Inspiration does not lie in the instrument, it lies in us all.
