Guided Project Two
Guided Project Two
Elementary Applications of Microcomputers in Music
Project II:
This project is concerned with how the nature of musical gestures are
modified when their associated timbres are changed.
General caveats:
1. This project is to be realized using the Performer
software, the T1 and both TG55 synthesizers.
2. It is not necessary that each timbre be your own
creation. Factory preset sounds are permitted.
Outline:
- all Performer sequencer tracks are to hold only one
note at a time - monophonic!
- each timbre is to have its own track in the sequencer
and associated MIDI channel
- tracks 1-3 will form a "rhythm bed" of percussion
sounds only, the choice of sounds and type of musical
gesture is up to you
- tracks 4-7 will form a layer of musical gestures using
the following types of sounds in any combination
sustained string-like timbres
sustained flute-like timbres
sustained brass-like timbres
- tracks 8-12 will form a second layer of gestures using
sound effect type timbres (electronic sounds) these are
to be considered as "event" sounds rather than
as a stream of musical information, this layer should
remain sparse
- create using the above layers a 1'20" experimental
composition and save to floppy disk
Part two:
- create two variations on your composition by changing
only the timbres associated with the tracks, this is to
be done in two ways as outlined below:
1. create a variation by swapping the original timbres
between tracks - NO NEW TIMBRES
2. create a variation by assigning all new timbres to
each of the tracks
Be prepared to present you work in class and discuss your findings.
Important note:
- the composition should evidence at least one example of
the following techniques using the performer sequencer
- time scale
- tempo change
- quantization
- retrograde
- retrograde time
- copy and paste
- scale velocity
Make detailed notes of your patches used, how you conceived of the sequence
and how you have used the above mentioned techniques. Be prepared to hand
this in along with the project on the date due. There will be no late
projects accepted.
