WEB-BASED and ESSAY QUESTIONS

Due date: In-class, Wednesday, July 11, 2001

Note: comprehensive and synthetic answers are expected for each of these questions. Answers must be typed and are expected to be of reasonable length, detail and accuracy. If secondary sources are used as references, be certain to cite them clearly in your work. Each response is worth 20 points: 120 points total.
1. Visit the website for Southern Tracks Recording.
Write a comprehensive report concerning the studio, its tools, clients and orientation. Using the materials on the web together with your experiences in our visit there and long discussion with Karl Eigsiker, describe how this studio meets or exceeds the current pro-level studio conceptions as described in various publications such as MIX magazine.
2. What special considerations are made at Southern Tracks in terms of methodologies which are based on the kinds of music and musicians that make up their client base? Explain in detail.
3. While Southern Tracks is neither a mastering studio (creating CD images for replication for example) nor a post-production facility, the most recent upgrade has been the ProTools Mix24 system. Explain how this is used at Southern Tracks and what special opportunities it presents for the engineer.
4. Visit the website for Comprehensive Technical Group.
Write a synopsis concerning this company and their general business. One of our graduates from the MI Recording Program is currently a Vice President and Owner of this company. How might he have been able to get into this admirable position with the techniques and opportunities available at GSU for learning and developing expertise?
5. Review the materials online at our course web concerning the Fairlight Prodigy2.
In general, but sufficiently detailed terms, describe the innovations displayed in the new DAW the Prodigy2. What features were most impressive to you in our comprehensive demo at CTG? What elements do you believe are the strongest features of the Prodigy2 and the weakest? Use materials gleaned from the online documentation to support your synopsis.
6. Visit the website for Crawford Communications.
Reviewing the material that pertains only to the Audio Group of Crawford discuss in detailed but general terms the innovations that they are spearheading. What new technologies are they investigating in particular? Describe through a detailed overview the general outline of their audio installations - how many studios of what type, and so on. What concerns or rationales have influenced their decisions?
