Digital Audio Post: Projects 1 and 2

MI 3230

First Half of Semester (7 weeks)

Task 1: Digital Editing Project - "Reducing the Score" (15% of course grade)

1. Select a work of music form the serious art music categories:

classical
jazz
avant-garde, etc.

Single movements are fine as long as the duration is acceptable to the terms of this project (see below).

2. Make sure that you can also find a copy of the score of the work you have selected.

3. The work that forms the basis of your project should be at least 5 minutes long - but, preferably, longer still.

4. Using the score and MicroEditor edit the duration of the work in question into three versions:

a. 90 seconds
b. 60 seconds
c. 30 seconds

5. It is crucial that your edits be technically perfect and that your shortened versions of the pieces be musical and well conceived.

6. Backup your work to DAT. But, leave the 3 versions on the systems for playback during class session. Be prepared with the score in hand to discuss your solution to this problem with other class members.

7. Keep your backup safe so that at the end of the semester we can restore your 3 versions for inclusion in the class CD we will be preparing.

Grading criteria:

1. has followed instructions
2. has produced a technically fine response to the problem
3. has maintained musicality

Task 2: Digital Assemblage - "Audio Scene Construction" (15% of course grade)

	1. Write a short "scene" - using text - which will form the basis for
your audiophonic translation. This written piece need not
be long - but, it must be typed and proofread for inclusion
in the CD liner notes at the end of the quarter.

	2. Using sound effects CDs, either your own, those supplied in class
of from our library collection, bring your "scene" or "story"
		to life in sound.

	3. Using MicroEditor record the sounds from CD and assemble them
		into a project file.

	4. Once you are satisfied with the results, save this project as
a .sf file and then backup to DAT individually the original
project (.mix) file and the .sf file. Keep only the .sf
		file on the computer systems.

	5. Be prepared to play your "scene" for the class during one of our
sessions, and to also share your written synopsis which was
		your starting point.

Grading criteria:
	1. creativity in response to the task
	2. all parts complete
	3. evidence of improving technical skill in using the DAW

NOTE: The midterm exam follows this project.
