Audio Post: Projects 3 and 4

MI 3230

Second Half of Semester (7 weeks)

Project III: Pigs ears make for fine tracks! (15% course grade)

Mastering of one musical work for inclusion on class CD.

1. You are to choose the best song from the provided tape - either the one
you like the best or the best one from a technical perspective.

2. Using MICROTOOLS and MICROEDITOR prepare the recording for mastering to
CD. Full use of SoundForge is permitted as well.

3. Keep in mind the following parameters:

	a. overall gain
	b. signal to noise ratio
	c. filtering and equalization
	d. fades, edits and enhancements

4. Create a .sf file that is the "master" of the song.

5. Optional Step: Create a second .sf file which presents a re-working of the
song - here you may cut and re-order sections - overdub - use more elaborate
processing (outboard) and so on. Try to keep the duration of this second
"version" as close to the original as possible.

6. Present one or both of these recordings at the final CD mastering session
as a file (or, files) on the Studio "A" MicroSound.

PROJECT IV: Writing the CD (15% course grade)

We will do the last project together. Preparing and making the CD. This is
really quite straight forward, and once you do it one time you will be able
to proceed on your own for the rest of the year "burning" CDs.

Please endeavor to bring your materials onto the Studio A MicroSound, by
restoring them from DAT, in advance of this session. Our session will be
during our normal final exam period. You will need the following materials
on disc:

	1. audio scene(s)
	2. music reduction edits (30,60 and 90 seconds)
	3. music master recording(s)

Be sure to have your program notes available for your audio scenes. Send
these to me via email as soon as you can. These will be important in making
the CD booklet.
