Unit Three shifts the focus somewhat from the instrument inventors and early pioneers of the field to the composers themselves, and to the various studios for experimentation - such as Cologne, Milan and Paris in Europe, and associated American studios such as Columbia-Princeton. Tape music took root swiftly, and a number of seminal works were created in these early days. Most serious and active electroacoustic composers working today have experience with this type of sonic creativity. Works such as, Varese - Poem Electronique, Berio-Thema, Stockhausen - Gesang and Cage - Williams Mix (to name but a few), have had a tremendous impact on modern music. Musique Concrète, as the French School called it was a dominating genre. Eventually, it gave way to Electronicshe Musik (the beginnings of electronic music synthesis) of the German School. Musique Concrète has returned in the last decade to become once again a vibrant and essential genre.
