The Cultural Service of the French Embassy

Based in New York, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy has affiliate offices in nine other US cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Washington.

The mission of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy is to offer to the American public the opportunity to explore, experience and benefit the evolving world of French Culture. To achieve this, its different departments - Education, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Cinema and books - work with American presenters, educators and audiences.

The Education office cooperates closely with American schools and universities in a wide range of linguistic and academic projects to promote French Culture and French Language: Research grants, teaching assistant positions in France (800 positions are offered annually to students of French), advanced-level training courses for teachers and more. Several prestigious universities have established, in collaboration with the Cultural services, interdisciplinary centers to further their special interest in French Culture.

In the artistic field, the Cultural Services serve as a liaison and source of information to American professionals, and encourage American institutions to present works by French artists. They also serve as a facilitator in the realization of their projects. For instance, in Performing Arts area, the Cultural Services in Atlanta implemented long term relationships with theatrical organizations in the metropolitan Atlanta area and created alliances between theatrical organizations in the metropolitan Atlanta area and created alliances between American and French companies which, among other projects, brought to the forefront in 2001, the creation of "Black Battles with Dogs" written by French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltes.

In the area of Visual Arts, the Cultural Services are actively engaged in the presentation of works by French artists in the field of painting, sculpture, photography, installations, design, architecture, video and new technology. Because French art from past centuries is so well represented in American museums and well-known by the public at large, emphasis is currently placed on modern contemporary French art, particularly creations of living artists.

After extensive reflection and preparation with three prominent artistic venues in Atlanta - Georgia State University School of Art Gallery, Atlanta College of Art Gallery and The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center - a French season "Situations Françaises" will be launched in the spring of 2003. Exhibitions and residences of artists are scheduled for this four-month event, the most stimulating the Cultural Services have been able to implement in the Southeast.
